My Gym in Nottingham Is Too Busy!

What You Can Do About It – And Why There’s a Better Option

We hear this all the time

“My gym is too busy!” or “My gym is full of groups and cliques”

Since opening Real World Fitness in Colwick, we’ve welcomed loads of people from PureGym, Virgin, and Everlast who were fed up with endless queues, kit left everywhere in the gym, overcrowded floors, and workouts cut short.

We get it. Sometimes you stay put because your gym is nearby, or you’ve convinced yourself “all gyms are like this.” They aren’t.

What “too busy” really means

  • One squat rack, or bench press, and five people waiting.

  • PTs who are more interested in chatting to each other than coaching.

  • Sticking even vaguely rigidly to your plan becomes impossible—because the kit you need is always taken.

Sound familiar?

That’s not training. That’s just surviving the chaos.

How to still train if you’re stuck in a busy gym

If you can’t change gyms just yet, here’s how to keep progressing:

Think movement patterns, not exercises. Bench press vs dumbbell press, squat vs goblet squat. Adapt – it’s not ideal, but better than nothing.
Rotate with structure. Hit every muscle group over the week, even if exercise swaps happen.
Be flexible with rest & order. Equipment busy? Adjust without stressing—it won’t kill your gains in the short term.

When it’s time to make a change

If you’re always waiting for kit, rushing through sessions, or leaving half-done, it’s not you—it’s your gym.

A better gym will:

  • Cap membership so you can actually train.

  • Support your goals instead of forcing compromises.

  • Fit your life so you don’t skip sessions.
