I’m now walking again pain free!
I have always been a fit and active person, a keen hiker, yoga practitioner and teacher, and also enjoyed leisurely running and cycling.
In constant pain…
Over the last 5 years or so I have suffered increasing buttock and leg pain which was only recently diagnosed as sciatic nerve pain from lumbosacral disc prolapse, also largely attributed to weak supporting muscles in the pelvic floor and lower back.
This eventually resulted in my having to reduce or give up altogether these much loved activities. Yoga practice became very uncomfortable, with most of the postures causing pain. Similarly my hikes had become shorter as the pain began to appear at less and less distance until a few months ago I could barely walk for 5 minutes on some days without pain.
I tried everything…
It wasn’t so severe that I couldn’t continue to walk, but more annoying and niggling and just not getting better whatever I tried. I have tried numerous remedies over the years: physiotherapy, Pilates, osteopathy, massage, rest, no rest, no yoga, more yoga…you name it!
No improvements were made, and I felt that overall things were gradually getting worse and my mood began to be affected too. I began to realise that I may have to learn to accept that this was the way it was, and I would just have to live with it.
Then I found Real World Fitness…
During this time my husband had started Personal Training with Derran at RWF and had mentioned to him about my predicament. I ended up being persuaded to try out some weight training although my physio had some apprehension about it. Understandably I think just because there are many trainers out there who don’t necessarily have as much knowledge as Derran does.
So…after only a few weeks of regular twice weekly weight training with Derran my leg pain has significantly improved. I can’t believe that I can now walk again for up to an hour with very little discomfort. This has not been possible for many months.
I now even have days where I don’t feel the pain AT ALL…!
I haven’t gone back to yoga yet but I am sure I will be able to in the near future with continued strengthening of my body.
Derran’s knowledge and expertise is outstanding. I am a doctor and like to think that I know a bit about the human body but I was, and continue to be, very impressed by his level of knowledge.
He has worked gently and slowly with me with a great attention to detail, gradually building up my confidence as well as my physical strength.
After much scepticism about how much the strength training would help me…I now only wish I had begun it sooner!
I hope to continue to improve and slowly get back to my previous level of activity. I am hugely optimistic that this will happen with the help and support of Derran and RWF, and I know that I will be fitter and stronger than ever, mentally as well as physically.
