If you’re looking for hip replacement rehab in Nottingham, Real World Fitness can help.
Whilst a fairly straight-forward operation, a hip replacement is a major life event. In amongst the logistics of having time off work, physically recovering from the surgery and coping with (temporarily) limited mobility, you have to deal with the psychological side effects. Will I ever get back to my sport? Will I always be in pain? Am I “old” now?
We’ve worked with several clients to get them successfully back on their feet after a hip replacement – and we can do it for you too!
After a hip replacement surgery is performed, you’re going to want to make the most of your time off. That means getting as active as possible as soon as possible, within your own limits. We help clients assess those limits, and push them to work as hard as they safely can to bring their flexibility and strength back to life.
With our help, clients have been able to speed up their hip replacement recovery and enjoy life again pain-free in no time!
Activities you can do to speed up your hip replacement recovery
Hip replacement surgery is a life-changing event, and recovery can be difficult. You want your quality of life back, and quickly.
We make sure to include activities that will help speed up the process, and help you get back to your life as quickly as possible.
Start by following a balanced diet that includes carbohydrates and protein. This will help to rebuild muscle tissue and reduce inflammation. Take ibuprofen as prescribed to reduce pain and inflammation, and help you get through the early recovery stage. Make sure to keep your body moving – even if it’s just a short walk around the block. These are the basic building blocks to get you back up and, not quite, running!
We get our Nottingham hip replacement rehab clients to follow a brief course of proprioception – essentially helping the body to “relearn” where the feet are, and help prevent trips and falls. The replacement of a hip often changes the length of one leg, and this can temporarily confuse you, especially in older clients, and knock your confidence. We work hard to minimise this – after all, without feeling confident, you’re less likely to push on to harder exercise.
Our gym in Nottingham is perfectly set up to help new and nervous clients! We understand that the last thing someone wants when recovering from a major health intervention is to be in a crowded, loud environment. We deliberately see clients at quieter times for issues like a hip replacement, so there’s no distractions and you can focus on the recovery.
Hip replacement surgery, and the recovery afterwards, isn’t easy, but it’s worth it in the end.
With patience and the help of Real World Fitness in Nottingham, you’ll make it through the process unscathed.
How can I minimize the recovery risks of a hip replacement?
There are a few things you can do to minimize the risks of hip replacement surgery. For one, consult with your doctor or surgeon well in advance about the procedure. They will be able to give you an accurate estimate of the risks and benefits of hip replacement surgery, and give you some ideas about strengthening pre-surgery.
If you’re able to exercise, even in discomfort, prior to the surgery you will be in a better position to recover after it. We know that’s easier said than done, and we know that exercising when you’re in pain is demoralising, frustrating and often feels pointless. In our experience though, it pays dividends when it comes to the recovery afterwards. The less you allow your body to run itself down in the lead up to the op, the easier the recuperation will be.
We work closely with clients before and after the surgery to maximise their chances of getting back to normal as quickly as possible. In short, the more fitness and muscle you can retain, the easier your recovery will be, the lessor the chances of complications, and the quicker you can return to your sport or active hobby.
Are there any activities that I should avoid while recovering from a hip replacement surgery?
For those recovering from hip replacement surgery, it’s important to avoid any strenuous activities while in the early days of recovery.
We typically advise allowing yourself 6-8 weeks to fully heal before engaging in any type of physical activity. Partly this is because the new joint needs time to settle, and partly because the surgery causes so much bruising and inflammation.
You’ll be unlikely to be physically capable of much more than a slow walk in those early weeks, let alone wanting to!
It’s key to avoid certain movements that move the hip beyond a particular range of motion. In the early days, you’ll see your hospital-appointed physio and they’ll assess what those angles are, and give you some specific exercises to match you. We don’t interfere in that process – we come in once the physio has signed you off to begin exercising again.
