You could say that I have been a bit ‘sporadic’ with regards to exercise in the past. In my 20’s I dabbled a bit with aerobics, I did a bit of kick boxing and I went to the gym for a while. There was a time (in my 30’s) when I did very little in terms of exercise.
A few years ago (in my mid 40’s) I started going to pole fit classes and I really enjoyed it. However, as pole fitness requires a lot of upper body strength I decided that in order to get better at poling, I would go to the gym to increase my strength.
The thing is, I really enjoyed being back at the gym, lifting weights. In time I found that I lost my pole ‘mojo’ and that I preferred being in the gym with a pair of dumb bells in my hands. The problem was however, that I didn’t really have much of a clue what I was doing in the gym. I used to turn up with a programme but the programme was made up by me and didn’t really make an awful lot of sense.
Like a lot of people, I turned to You Tube and Instagram for help. I watched numerous workout videos and tutorials on how to squat and deadlift and I hoped that I was doing it right. The problem was that my weights had plateaued and I wasn’t sure how to make progress.
I decided that I needed to find a coach. I wanted to find someone with experience, someone who knew how to execute the movement patterns and could identify my weak areas and put together a programme which was tailored to me. I also wanted a coach who would be patient with me and not put me through a military style ‘beasting’ every time I trained.
I did my research. I asked round, I looked at different gyms on-line and finally decided to get in touch with RWF after having seen their posts on Facebook. I checked out the RWF website and read through the PT profiles. They seemed to offer the sort of thing that I was looking for. I contacted Derran and arranged to visit for an informal chat.
We discussed what my goals were and what my training background had been up until that point. The chat was very useful. I felt reassured and confident that Derran could help me to achieve my goals. I have now been a client of Derran’s since the latter part of 2017. Over time we have been working on improving my compound lifts and generally getting stronger.
Since training with Derran my overall strength has improved greatly and I am really pleased with my
progress. I have learnt from Derran how to lift weights safely, work through plateaus and become fitter and stronger.
A few years ago I had bowel surgery and had a colostomy for two years. I was told by the medical profession that I should never lift anything heavy as it could do a lot of damage.
I refused to accept this and this was another reason that I got a coach. I am pleased to say that at 48 years of age I have never been fitter or stronger and am certainly able to lift heavy!
In 2018 I even entered my first powerlifting competition…this was something I never thought would happen in a million years!

I see the money spent on training as an investment in my future health and in my opinion it is definitely money well spent
