How to move 240,000kg in 10 days…

Well, any of you that follow me on Twitter (@nottingham_pt) will know I’ve embarked on a kettlebell challenge. For kettlebell virgins, that’s one of these: The challenge is simple, and evil, in equal measure. It”s just 1000 swings a day, for 10 consecutive days. Using the recommended 24kg kettlebell, that’s 240,000kg (or 240 tons) of weight shifted in just 10 days. The thinking behind it is, again, simple. How much work can your body handle doing, on top of your existing life and training commitments? Bearing in mind that even if you’re fit and proficient with a kettlebell, you”re looking at this taking around an hour a day on top of what else you do. And, if I’m honest, most people will struggle to do all 1000 in a single session. So, it involves a little bit of planning. You don’t, like me, want to suddenly realise you have 1000 swings left to do and it’s 9pm…(that was my first day. Mistake has NOT been repeated!). As I write this, I”m on Day 8, and have upped the challenge to the 28kg kettlebell after Day 6. The idea is that the challenge should remain, well, challenging. I’ve tried to take that to heart! I took two simple measurements before starting – waist (around the belly button area) and weight. As at Day 5, I had lost one inch from my waist. Let’s see what has happened by Day 10. Incidentally, I’ve stupidly decided to extend the challenge. I”m going to try for 30,000 in 30 days. It”s possible this will break me… However, I’m making two modifications to the original rules: 1. I’m allowing the “banking” of reps up to a total of 1000 in a ten day period. Basically, I’m allowing myself to “earn” a day off every 10 days by doing extra reps on the other days. 2.I’m reducing my normal training to lower reps, and briefer sessions. The idea of doing three or four heavy weight training sessions per week on TOP of this, for a month, brings me to tears. If you want to join me, feel free to get in touch. Several clients and friends are also doing the 10 day version. I’ve yet to...
